9. Small car brands

????Smart car has been a money pit that Mercedes has been trying to dig out of for 14 years. Now it has partnered with Renault on a replacement due in 2014 that will share a platform with the next-generation Renault Twingo minicar. At the very least, the partnership should be more successful than Smart's original pairing with Swatch watches. But BMW's Mini (above) has already been an enormous success, pioneering the premium small car segment and spawning a coupe, convertible, roadster, wagon, and SUV. The next-generation Mini will share a front-wheel-drive platform with upcoming small BMW models -- a shrewd combination if BMW can pull it off.
