The long-rumored alternate version of the 2017 DC Comics superhero film Justice League is becoming a reality, HBO and Warner Bros. announced Wednesday.
The so-called Snyder cut—named for director Zack Snyder, who worked on the original film—will have its world premiere exclusively on HBO Max sometime in 2021. HBO Max is Warner Media’s direct-to-consumer offering that will debut on May 27 of this year.
The decision comes after fans on social media called for the alternate version's release. The campaign, which started in the wake of the original film's underwhelming release, never subsided, the filmmakers said.
"The chant to #Release The Snyder Cut has been a daily drumbeat in our offices and inboxes," said Robert Greenblatt, chairman of Warner Media's entertainment and direct-to-consumer business, in a statement. "Well, the fans have asked, and we are thrilled to finally deliver. At the end of the day, it really is all about them, and we are beyond excited to be able to release Zack’s ultimate vision for this film in 2021."
The original Justice League raked in just $94 million during its opening weekend—dozens of millions less than superhero flicks Suicide Squad (2016) and Man of Steel (2013), the latter of which was directed by Snyder.
